ARM - Associated Risk Managers

19th ARM National Conference ~ May 1 – 3, 2018

May 03, 2018

The city of Boston, MA brought about the theme of this year’s conference . . . Choose to be Revolutionary. What a great phrase to define ARM’s efforts to clearly differentiate ARM from other organizations, engage new partners and support future growth. Our host hotel was the historic Omni Parker House in downtown Boston.

The conference began with the Board of Directors, Shareholders, and Executive Directors meetings. The General Session convened after lunch and kicked off with Scott Spangler’s welcome to attendees and overview of the conference. Scott introduced exiting ARM Chairman Greg Easley who announced the election of new ARM Chairman, Mary Pursell for the 2018-2020 term. Mary acknowledged and thanked Greg for his efforts the past two years. The Executive Committee then joined the podium and presented Scott Spangler and Rose Marie Rigoni the Robert E. Weaver Memorial Award for their outstanding service to ARM over the past 18 years.

The General Session continued with the following speakers:

  • Kevin Bolger, Senior VP at AFCO Credit Corporation, who spoke of the relationship with ARMFiCo and shared profits from premium financing.
  • Ryan Collier, Chief Digital Officer of RPS, highlighted eThink Insurance, RPS’ online platform for its flagship cyber insurance product to slash time to convert an initial quote to an issued policy in minutes.
  • Keynote Speaker David W. Tralka, President & CEO of InsurBanc, a division of Connnecticut Community Bank, N.A. who related the Key Considerations of Agency Acquisition and Perpetuation.
  • Tish Fournet, President and Chris Crawford, Vice President of RPS Client Relations gave attendees an annual RPS update, success stories, introductions of RPS attendees, and distribution of override checks for business placed with ARM.
The day’s events ended with the Welcome Reception sponsored by AFCO giving attendees the opportunity to share food, drink and lots of networking with old and new acquaintances.

Breakout Sessions started bright and early Thursday morning with the following speakers:

  • Justin Gilmore, Ron Abbene and Art McKinney, Assurant Specialty, presented an overview of the most recent changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and Assurant Private Flood products.
  • Marie Szleszinski and Karen Bennett, RPS Healthcare, advised how RPS can partner with ARM agents to grow their healthcare, life sciences and human service book of business.
  • Dan King, Dan King Consulting, is an agency consulting specialist who discussed how to position your agency to meeting evolving opportunities to grow your business.
  • Mike Roberts and Jim Russo, Gallagher Benefit Services, provided guidance on wealth and risk transfer, long-term care options as well as business and estate succession planning.
  • Pat Edwards and Mike Hayes, RPS Workers Compensation, discussed the RPS risk management program for temporary staffing, and gave an overview of the impact of opioids in the workplace.
  • Kevin Doyle, Gallagher Mergers & Acquisitions, discussed the current state of the M&A marketplace, and valuable tips on ways to increase the value of your agency both for you and potential buyers.
Trade Fair - The Trade Fair/Luncheon followed the breakout sessions and is an important segment of the conference that provides the opportunity for attendees to network with all 6 breakout presenters mentioned above, as well as additional representation from:

  • AFCO Credit Corporation – Kevin Bolger
  • American Modern Insurance Group – Jim Stack and Glen Tiziani
  • HCC Tokio Marine – Mark Barry and Jerry Colistra
  • RPS –Christian Enwright/RPS Boston, and Kristen Fricano/Client Relations
Once again, a popular session of the conference was the Networking Group Discussion, where ARM agents gathered and shared ideas and experiences. The finale was the Offsite Event, sponsored by Risk Placement Services, Inc. (RPS) at The Chart House located on Boston’s Long Wharf for a relaxing dinner and chance to mingle and network with fellow ARM agents and guests. A great conclusion to a wonderful event! ARM is busy planning next year’s event in Chicago which will coincide with ARM’s 20-year anniversary with their Gallagher partnership. Details forthcoming . . . be sure to attend!
